Pedestrian Safety Study
Pedestrian Safety in Tribal Areas – Research
In Tribal areas across the United States, pedestrian safety is an urgent concern. This research project, published in January 2025 by the Federal Highway Administration, tackles this issue by pinpointing key risk factors—such as inadequate infrastructure and high-speed roads—and providing actionable strategies to reduce pedestrian crashes. Developed in collaboration with Tribal, State, and Federal partners, this study offers a vital roadmap for enhancing safety in often-overlooked areas.
What sets this project apart is its practical approach to risk assessment, backed by easy-to-use tools designed specifically for Tribal agencies. These resources include guides for assessing pedestrian safety risks, planning safety countermeasures like crosswalks or lighting, and reviewing case studies—all crafted to work without requiring extensive funding or expertise. By empowering Tribes to advocate for safer roads and implement real change, these tools bridge the gap between research and action.
